A Brief Guide to Making Rock Faces

This is how I made rock faces. Basically, gleaming information of the web. There are other ways, and there is nothing new here.

                                  Step 1:

                                  Picture
Take your wife's, mother's or spouse's best mixingbowl or jug. You will also need a piece of tin foil. I used "finishing plaster" from a hardware store because it is easy to break later, though you may want something stronger if you are moving the layout about a lot.

                                  Step 2:

                                  Picture
Scrumple tin foil up and carefully open it up and turn it up at the edges to make sure the plaster does not escape. Lay it flat in something, making sure there are still plenty of crinkles in it. I used a painting roller thingie. Mix plaster and pour (splatter?) the mixture in. Leave to dry completely

                                  Step 3:

                                  Picture
                                  Remove tin foil.

                                  Step 4:

                                  Picture
Apply a little gold/yellow colour as a base. I tried to cover about one third of the plaster.

                                  Step 5:

                                  Picture
I used a sponge to suck up some black paint and dribble it into the crevaces. This will highlight the depth. You do not need to be terrible accurate.

                                  Step 6:

                                  Picture
I sponged on a chocolate brown colour, trying not to cover the black, but covering some of the gold colour. Then took a light grey and lightly applied to the top of the bumps.

                                  Step 7:

                                  Picture
Break into the size you need. And glue where required. Mix a little more plaster and smooth the edges. Allow to dry.

                                  Step 8:

                                  Picture
Apply surrounding foliage, remembering to glue in a few stray bushes onto the face.

                                  Step 9:

                                  The finished product:
